Agriculture contributes significantly to the economy of many Upstate New York counties, as well as the state itself. Independent farmers are good at their job - growing good food. But, many farmers lack the time, technology and skills needed to stay on top of fluid prices and finding new markets in an increasingly complex food industry.
A handful of large corporations with resources to transport all types of food products in large quantities over long distances have a lock on most retail markets. Small farms have quality products, but may not be able to grow enough quantity or variety to satisfy large buyer demands. Hiring a broker is one answer, but it’s a solution that can reduce an individual farmer's profit margins out of existence. Farmers marketing together saves time and money, while offering industry buyers the quality food selection their customers want.
To help level the playing field, Upstate New York Growers & Packers (UNYG&P), was established in 2002. Representing farmers statewide, UNYG&P has organized as a legal entity; conducted a feasibility study to determine the need and optimum size of a centrally located produce processing and distribution facility; marketed fresh fruits and vegetables cooperatively to gain experience; and learned first-hand what it takes to develop and sell branded Coop-label and individual member value-added products.
